Short thoughts on school leadership. One idea a day.

  • Future-Ready Starts on Monday

Every school strategy now mentions being future-ready.

Few of them change what happens in a Year 9 classroom on Monday morning.

If the future needs students who can question, collaborate and cope with uncertainty, the test is simple. Where in this week’s timetable do they practise those things? Where are they assessed? Who notices when they improve?

A future-ready curriculum is built in small decisions. The task with no single right answer. The lesson where the teacher talks less. The assessment that rewards thinking over recall.

    The vision statement can wait.

  • The Speech Is the Easy Part

Most leaders think inspiration happens at the front of the hall.

The start-of-year address. The slide with the big quote. The applause.

    It rarely does.

Staff are inspired by what happens on a wet Tuesday in November. When you cover a lesson without being asked. When you remember that a colleague’s daughter had an exam. When you admit you got something wrong in front of the people who noticed it first.

The speech sets an expectation. Everything after it either confirms it or quietly cancels it.

Your team is keeping score, whether they mean to or not.

What did they see you do this week?

  • Step Back. Look Out. See Clearly.

    The holiday is here.

Clear the urgent work. Leave the rest on the table. It will still be there in a week.

Then take some time to look out of the window. Rest. Travel. Get some perspective.

With a little distance, patterns become easier to see. Problems become easier to solve.

    Clear thinking needs space.

Rest first. The clarity will follow.
